KARACHI: The chairman of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and federal minister for education, Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, has said his party’s demand to place Karachi under federal administration is not unconstitutional, insisting that the proposal falls within the framework of the constitution.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday after a laptop distribution ceremony at NED University, Siddiqui said that if the demand was being labelled as treason, then the relevant constitutional clause should be removed. He said he would raise the issue directly with the prime minister.
Commenting on the Gul Plaza tragedy, Siddiqui questioned whether even the Sindh government itself was satisfied with the findings of the inquiry report. His remarks appeared to reflect broader concerns over accountability and transparency following the incident.
Responding to questions about the delay in appointing a new chairperson of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the education minister said three names had been forwarded to the prime minister strictly on merit. He claimed that never before in the history of the HEC had candidates been selected through such a transparent process.
He said the government was now waiting for the prime minister’s decision, adding that the summary had been delayed despite the importance of the post. “This is a crucial position and should not have been delayed,” he said, noting that the prime minister had returned from an overseas visit. Siddiqui said he would seek an immediate appointment and, until then, would decide on an interim arrangement after consulting officials in Islamabad.
Addressing questions about alleged irregularities at the Federal Urdu University, Siddiqui said an investigative report had already been completed and action was required, though he acknowledged that political pressure and recommendations often complicated the process. The remarks have added fresh momentum to an already sensitive debate over Karachi’s governance and administrative future.
