KARACHI: Members of the Gopang community staged a protest outside the Karachi Press Club against the alleged police encounter killing of a young man, Ali Haider Gopang, by personnel of the Boat Basin police station, and the arrest of another youth, Shahnawaz Gopang.

The demonstration was led by Bilawal Gopang, Mashooq Gopang and Sajjad Gopang, and was attended by a large number of men and women from the community, who gathered outside the press club and held a sit-in on the road.

Protesters alleged that the police had falsely claimed an encounter and killed Ali Haider Gopang. They said the youths were travelling in a rickshaw to visit the shrine of Abdullah Shah Ghazi when the incident took place.

According to the protesters, police action was carried out against innocent youths, resulting in the killing of one and the arrest of another. They strongly condemned what they described as a fake encounter.

The protesters demanded that the Sindh government and the inspector general of Sindh police conduct a transparent investigation into the incident and take strict action against the police officials involved.

They also called for immediate legal action against those responsible for the killing of Ali Haider Gopang and demanded the release of the detained youth, Shahnawaz Gopang.
