The session, chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner Wajahat Ghafoor, brought together officials from the Health Department, Food Authority, local salt traders, and concerned citizens.
Aurangzeb Panhwar, Zonal Manager of Nutrition International, highlighted the severe health impacts of iodine deficiency, including goiter, nervous system disorders, complications in pregnancy, and reduced mental development in children. He stressed that iodine is critical for newborns’ cognitive growth, learning, memory, and intellectual development.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner emphasized that tackling iodine deficiency requires a collective effort from traders, salt manufacturers, and the public. He urged the exclusive use of iodized and certified salt and assured full support from the district administration.
Health Department representatives said awareness campaigns would be carried out in schools, hospitals, and at the community level, focusing on women, pregnant mothers, and parents. Food Authority officials stated that the quality of salt in shops would be strictly monitored, with legal action taken against the sale of substandard or uncertified products.
Salt traders attending the session pledged to sell only iodized, certified salt to protect the health of future generations. Participants concluded that iodized salt is essential not only for daily nutrition but also for building a healthy society, underscoring the importance of choosing certified salt for a safer and healthier future.
