KARACHI: Karachi police officials held a high-level review meeting on Wednesday to assess actions against extortion and street crime in the city, officials said. The session was chaired by Javed Alam Odho at the Central Police Office, Karachi.
Additional IGs, heads of CTD, Special Branch, DIGs Headquarters, zonal DIGs, DIG CIA, district SSPs and SPs of investigation divisions attended either in person or via video link.
During the briefing, AIG Operations reported that since 1 January, 33 extortion complaints had been registered, of which 13 were verified as genuine. Twelve of these cases have been resolved, while one remains under investigation. Seven suspects were arrested and three were killed during police operations.
Officials said Karachi police maintain regular contact with the business community, updating them on actions taken against extortion and soliciting feedback on law enforcement measures. District officers were instructed to develop coordinated strategies to prevent street crime, and policing efforts against both extortion and street offences were to be intensified.
IG Sindh emphasized that complaints must be promptly registered and investigated, police presence should reassure citizens, and public confidence in law enforcement should be maintained. Additional measures include increasing general hold-ups and checkpoints ahead of Ramadan, deploying district Shaheen Force units under coordinated patrol strategies, and preparing contingency plans for the holy month.
