KARACHI: Farooq Sattar, a senior leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), expressed reservations about the manner in which the judicial commission investigating the Gul Plaza building has been conducting its proceedings, saying he was withholding his final opinion on the process.

Speaking to reporters in the premises of the Sindh high court in Karachi, Sattar said his party had appeared to assist the court and had submitted documents that, he claimed, clearly identified irregularities in the construction of the building.

He said a case had previously been registered against officials of the Sindh Building Control Authority over their alleged role in illegal construction and questioned what progress had been made in those proceedings.

Sattar said the party had emailed detailed submissions to the commission on 19 February but was told that the application did not meet the required criteria. He urged the commission to allow one hour for his counsel and half an hour for him to present their arguments.

The MQM-P leader also criticized what he described as 18 years of the “most corrupt government”, claiming his party possessed evidence and could become a formal party to the case, but had not been heard.

He said MQM had been the first to demand an inquiry into the matter and would soon hold a detailed press conference on the issue.
