ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has accused the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government of planning to form a “release force” for the jailed founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf while remaining silent on terrorism.

In a statement, Asif said the provincial administration was avoiding participation in the funerals of martyrs despite daily casualties among police personnel. He claimed that for the party leadership the release of its founder had become the “first and last priority”, while all other matters, including national security, had lost importance.

The defence minister said the province was being run only to protect the chief minister’s position and questioned the internal unity of the party, alleging that it had split into several factions. He added that political and administrative affairs had been pushed aside as attention remained fixed on a single issue.

Asif also claimed that differences existed among various PTI groups, but they were united on one point – that their founder should remain in prison. He alleged that political workers were engaged in internal disputes while social media commentators outside the country were benefiting from the ongoing situation.

The remarks come at a time of continued security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where police and security forces have faced repeated attacks, and political tensions remain high over the legal and political future of the PTI leadership.
