MOSCOW/TEHRAN: Russia and Iran have stepped forward to offer mediation between Pakistan and Afghanistan as tensions along their shared border continue to rise. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, writing on X, urged both countries to resolve disputes through dialogue and neighborly cooperation, highlighting that the holy month of Ramadan is a time for self-restraint and unity in the Islamic world. Tehran expressed readiness to provide support to facilitate talks and strengthen mutual understanding.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, emphasizing that disputes should be addressed through diplomatic channels. Both Russia and Iran stated they are prepared to act as mediators if requested by Islamabad or Kabul.
Iran’s offer follows its history of regional diplomacy, having previously mediated during earlier periods of border tension. Analysts note that Tehran and Moscow’s combined approach reflects a shared interest in containing violence, preventing cross-border incidents, and promoting dialogue-driven solutions, while also reinforcing their influence in South Asia’s security landscape. These statements signal a broader international push to encourage restraint and provide Pakistan and Afghanistan with avenues to de-escalate tensions without further military confrontation.
