AHMEDABAD: Ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup final, the Indian cricket team appears to be influenced by superstition and precautionary beliefs, taking extra measures to avoid repeating past disappointments. The final is scheduled to be played between India and New Zealand in Ahmedabad.
According to Indian media reports, the team has changed its hotel in Ahmedabad, avoiding the accommodation it used during the T20 World Cup 2023 final, where India lost to Australia. No official statement has been given regarding the hotel change, but media observers suggest that the move is linked to superstition, aiming to alter the team’s luck. In the previous World Cup, India had also faced defeat against South Africa in the Super Eight stage while staying at the same hotel.
Reports indicate that a senior support staff member is said to offer prayers at each venue for the team’s success. Ahead of the semi-final, the team also delayed its training session in Mumbai by 45 minutes to avoid any supposed effects of a lunar eclipse, reflecting their careful approach to perceived omens.
Further reports suggest that India may prefer to play the final on a red pitch in Ahmedabad. Two weeks ago, the team suffered a loss to South Africa on a black pitch at the same venue. Ahmedabad offers different pitch conditions, including red soil, black soil, and mixed red-black surfaces. The semi-final in Mumbai was played on a red soil pitch, where India’s batting performance had been successful.
Indian media has described the Ahmedabad venue as “unlucky” for the team. By changing their arrangements and carefully selecting conditions, the team is attempting to reverse previous misfortunes and improve its chances of victory in the T20 World Cup final.
