ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a series of key government decisions aimed at reducing expenditures and addressing emerging regional challenges, saying peace in the region is under serious threat.
In a televised address to the nation, the prime minister said Pakistan is facing terrorism on its western borders, adding that the country’s armed forces, under the leadership of the army chief, are striving to safeguard national security and sovereignty.
He also expressed deep sorrow over the martyrdom of Ali Khamenei and his family, and condemned attacks on Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain, warning that such incidents threaten regional peace. The prime minister said Pakistan stands shoulder to shoulder with these countries and considers their security linked with its own.
Announcing major austerity measures, Shehbaz Sharif said fuel provided to government vehicles will be reduced by 50 percent for the next two months, while 60 percent of official vehicles will remain off the roads during this period.
He further said salaries of officers in Grade 20 and above will face a two-day deduction, with the amount to be used for public relief initiatives. Government departments will also reduce their expenses by 20 percent.
The prime minister announced a ban on the purchase of vehicles, air conditioners and other equipment for government offices. Foreign visits by federal and provincial ministers, advisers, special assistants, and governors have also been suspended.
He added that, except for essential services, 50 percent staff will work in both public and private sectors, and offices will operate four days a week, with an additional weekly holiday.
The prime minister also ordered two weeks of holidays for all schools, with online classes to continue during the period.
Warning hoarders and profiteers, Shehbaz Sharif said strict action will be taken against those exploiting the situation, and provinces have been directed to ensure enforcement.
He concluded by urging national unity, saying Pakistan needs solidarity and collective responsibility more than ever.
