ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged Pakistan not to extend the tenure of senior officials, including the NAB Chairman, citing concerns over governance, fiscal transparency, and anti-corruption measures.
During the final day of economic review talks, the IMF criticized discrepancies between government statements and policies, including a draft law that could exempt parliamentarians from declaring assets. Officials also stressed faster verification of assets for senior government figures and the need for sustainable reforms to improve tax collection and fiscal discipline.
The Pakistani government reassured the IMF of its commitment to fiscal measures, including collecting Rs1,468 billion in petroleum levy, stabilizing foreign reserves, and pursuing austerity measures. Talks focused on achieving a primary surplus and resolving financing gaps, with additional virtual rounds expected if delays occur.
The IMF highlighted that strong governance and timely implementation of reforms are crucial to maintain investor confidence and fiscal stability.
