KARACHI: Sindh’s senior minister and provincial minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, announced plans to expand Karachi’s public transport network with additional electric vehicle (EV) buses and more double-decker buses.
The provincial government has decided to launch new EV bus routes in Karachi before Eid and gradually introduce the service in other districts after the festival. Progress has also been made on starting the EV taxi service.
The announcement came during a key meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department, chaired by Sharjeel Inam Memon, attended by Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, MD of Sindh Mass Transit Authority Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, and other officials. Discussions focused on improving public transport, introducing new routes, adding double-decker buses, and addressing road infrastructure challenges.
Memon said the government is prioritising work on all Karachi roads and will coordinate with relevant departments to resolve issues on Peoples Bus Service routes. He confirmed that new EV bus routes would start before Eid, including a new route from Gulshan-e-Mehmood to Tower next week.
He added that after Eid, the service would expand to other districts including Hyderabad, Tando Allahyar, Sukkur, Shikarpur, and Khairpur. The expansion aims to provide modern, reliable, and environmentally friendly travel options to more citizens.
Memon also announced that after Eid, memoranda of understanding for the EV taxi project will be signed between Sindh Bank, SEDF, and SMTE. He emphasised that the Sindh government remains committed to delivering quality, affordable, and sustainable public transport.
