TEL AVIV: Iranian missile strikes targeting Dimona have caused major destruction in southern Israel, with multiple casualties reported after a series of attacks on key cities including Arad and surrounding areas.
According to reports, Iran launched cluster warhead missiles toward Dimona, a highly secured city housing Israel’s nuclear facility, marking one of the most intense escalations in the ongoing conflict.Officials said at least six people were killed and more than 180 injured in Arad, while dozens were wounded in Dimona after buildings collapsed and infrastructure was damaged.
Several structures, including a three-storey building, were completely destroyed.Iranian media described the strikes as retaliation for earlier attacks on its nuclear facilities, including Natanz. Explosions and airstrike reports also emerged from multiple Iranian cities, though details of damage remain unclear.Israel has issued fresh warnings of possible further missile attacks targeting southern regions, including Beersheba and areas near the Dead Sea.
Reports suggested that missile defence systems struggled to intercept some of the incoming projectiles. The International Atomic Energy Agency said it was aware of the incident but found no evidence of damage to the nuclear research centre in Dimona and reported no abnormal radiation levels. The escalation extended beyond Israel, with reports of explosions near a US military base in Baghdad and heightened tensions across the Gulf region.
Iranian forces claimed to have targeted military and security installations, while regional countries strengthened air defences.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said emergency and rescue services were being reinforced following the attacks, calling it a difficult day for the country. Schools across Israel were closed as a precaution.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump warned Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours or face further strikes on its power infrastructure. Iran responded by warning that any attack on its energy systems could trigger wider retaliation across the region.
