KARACHI: A dangerous iPhone hacking tool known as “Dark Sword” has been leaked online, raising serious concerns about the safety of user data worldwide.
According to a report by TechCrunch, the spyware is now publicly available on GitHub, significantly increasing the risk of cyberattacks.
Experts say the tool does not require advanced technical skills, meaning even low-level hackers can exploit it within minutes. Researchers at cybersecurity firm iVerify warned that the spyware can extract sensitive data from affected devices, including contacts, messages, call logs and saved passwords.
The threat is particularly severe for users running older versions of iOS 18, as the exploit is reportedly more effective on outdated systems. Security analysts, including experts linked to Google, have also confirmed the vulnerability in older software environments.
Apple has acknowledged the issue and urged users to update their devices immediately. The company said the latest software versions offer protection against the exploit and recommended enabling Lockdown Mode for additional security.
With an estimated 2.5 billion active Apple devices worldwide, a large number still operating on outdated software could leave millions exposed to potential cyberattacks.
Cybersecurity experts have warned that hacking attempts may increase in the coming weeks, advising users to avoid suspicious links and websites and install updates without delay.
