WASHINGTON: JD Vance reportedly clashed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a telephone call over the handling of the Iran war, according to British media reports.
The report said Vance criticised Netanyahu for portraying the Iran conflict as easy and for encouraging Donald Trump to become more deeply involved, warning that such expectations had not materialised.
Vance was quoted as saying that Netanyahu had shown excessive optimism about the prospects of regime change in Iran and had misled Trump about the likely outcome of the conflict.
Sources said Netanyahu had previously assured Trump that both the war and regime change in Iran would be straightforward, but the US vice president was aware of the realities on the ground.
The report added that Vance is currently leading diplomatic efforts to bring the Iran war to an end. It also noted that despite the death of Ali Khamenei, the Iranian leadership’s grip on power had further strengthened.
A day after the call, Israeli media reportedly published a misleading account claiming Vance had reprimanded Netanyahu over settler violence against Palestinians. The White House expressed suspicion that the story may have been fabricated to discredit the US vice president.
