TEHRAN: Iranian forces have captured a US pilot after a fighter jet was shot down, though the claim has not been independently verified.
Iranian media suggested the pilot ejected from the aircraft and landed inside Iran, where he was later taken into custody.
According to the Iranian news agency Tasnim, unconfirmed reports indicated that the country’s armed forces detained a US pilot who had parachuted to the ground after his jet was allegedly hit in Iranian airspace.
A correspondent in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province said the pilot landed inside Iran following the downing of a US F-35 aircraft.Sources added that US forces suspected the pilot was alive and attempted a rescue operation.
However, some reports suggested the pilot may have already been taken into custody by Iranian forces. Iranian authorities said further details would be shared later, while the claim remains unverified by independent sources.Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had also shot down a second US F-35 aircraft in central Iran using an advanced air defence system.
According to the statement, the aircraft was completely destroyed and was linked to the UK’s RAF Lakenheath squadron.
