KHAIRPUR: A ceremony was held at the Midwifery School Khairpur where delivery room equipment was distributed among 10 students who had recently completed a Community Midwifery course, aimed at supporting them in setting up clinics in their hometowns and improving maternal and child healthcare at the grassroots level.
The event was presided over by District Health Officer Dr Kaleemullah Shaikh, who said the health department, through the RMNCH programme, was providing equipment to Batch 14 of Community Midwifery graduates so they could deliver safer maternal and child health services in their respective areas.
He said the Sindh government’s objective was to ensure that every woman had access to safe and quality healthcare, adding that trained and skilled midwives were essential for achieving this goal.
Dr Shaikh noted that in districts such as Khairpur, where many areas still lacked basic healthcare facilities, the role of community midwives was particularly important.
He said the distribution of clinical equipment would enable graduates to establish local clinics and provide healthcare services closer to home for women and children. He added that this step would play a key role in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates.
He urged the graduates to treat the profession not merely as a source of income but as a responsibility, advising them to apply their training in practice, maintain hygiene and safety standards, follow professional ethics, and treat patients with compassion and respect.
Dr Shaikh also assured that the health department would provide full technical guidance and support to help midwives improve their services. He further called on parents and local communities to trust trained midwives and use their services for safe home deliveries.
The ceremony was attended by District Coordinator of the Lady Health Worker Programme Dr Salihan Baloch, ADHO Dr Naila Abbasi, Nursing School Principal Fatima Shar, Midwifery School Principal Surya Dayo, along with a large number of students and staff.
