ISLAMABAD: The Federal Shariat Court has declared attempted suicide a criminal offence, overturning recent legislative changes that had removed related provisions from the law.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iqbal Hameed ur Rehman, and comprising Justice Muhammad Anwar Iqbal and Justice Amir Khan, announced the reserved verdict.
The court declared the government’s legislation un-Islamic and struck it down after approving petitions filed against the 2022 law. The law had removed the provision that treated attempted suicide as a criminal offence.
With this ruling, the court restored the relevant section of the criminal law that had previously been omitted through the 2022 amendment.
Advocates Hammad Hassan Dar and Azam Malik represented the petitioners in the case.
