WASHINGTON: Fears of a renewed conflict between the United States and Iran have intensified, with US and Israeli media reporting fresh discussions between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the possibility of escalating tensions into war.
According to reports, the Israeli military has been placed on high alert following the talks and is prepared to join potential US-led strikes against Iran. In the event of conflict, the Pentagon is said to have identified multiple targets inside Iran.
US broadcaster CNN reported that President Trump is expected to consult his national security team later this week as deliberations intensify.
Israeli media claimed that in the past 24 hours, dozens of US cargo aircraft carrying weapons and ammunition arrived in Tel Aviv from American bases in Germany. Channel 13 Israel described the transfer as part of preparations for a possible renewed war against Iran.
The reports also said President Trump had stepped up consultations on the issue, including a phone call with Netanyahu on Sunday and prior discussions with key members of his national security team.
According to CNN, the Pentagon’s plans include targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure and other strategic sites if hostilities begin.
