BEIJING:: China has renewed its call for the United States and Iran to immediately halt military actions and return to dialogue, expressing deep concern over the escalating conflict in the region.
Speaking at a regular press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China was “gravely concerned” by the latest developments and warned that continued military confrontation would only worsen the situation.
Lin stressed that military action could not provide a lasting solution to the dispute and urged all parties to respect the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of regional countries. He called on the United States and Iran to exercise restraint, stop escalating tensions and resume political and diplomatic engagement.
The Chinese official said Beijing has remained in contact with all relevant parties, including Iran, since the outbreak of hostilities and has actively supported efforts aimed at promoting peace and negotiations.
China’s appeal came as tensions between Washington and Tehran intensified following a series of military exchanges over the past two weeks. The latest escalation followed fresh US air strikes on Iranian military targets, which Washington said were launched in response to the downing of a US Army helicopter.
Iran later announced retaliatory attacks on American military facilities in the region. Iranian officials said the actions were a response to recent US strikes inside the country.
Lin reiterated that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward and urged both sides to work towards an early, comprehensive and lasting ceasefire to prevent further instability in the Middle East.
