KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has described 5 July 1977 as a black day in Pakistan’s democratic history, saying it marked the overthrow of the public mandate, the Constitution and parliamentary democracy.
In a statement issued on the anniversary, Bilawal said the military takeover of 5 July 1977 was an attack on the people’s right to rule and democratic institutions. He said those behind the imposition of martial law believed they could silence the public, but history proved otherwise.
He said the sacrifices of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and countless pro-democracy workers demonstrated that the ideals of constitutional rule, democracy and the sovereignty of the people could not be defeated.
Bilawal said that, 49 years later, the party remained committed to defending the supremacy of the Constitution at all costs. He added that the Pakistan Peoples Party would continue to safeguard the sanctity of the vote, parliamentary democracy and the people’s right to govern through democratic means.
He said the true tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for democracy was to reject every form of dictatorship and intolerance, while continuing efforts to build a united, democratic and progressive Pakistan.
The PPP chairman reiterated that his party would continue to uphold democratic values and work for the protection of constitutional institutions and the rule of law.
