Young protesters raid kitchen, indulging in available food, and some seen taking valuable items

DHAKA: A wave of unrest swept through Dhaka on Sunday as thousands of protesters stormed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence and the parliament building. The unprecedented demonstrations resulted in significant damage and the seizure of valuable items from both sites.

Videos circulating on social media vividly captured the scenes of chaos as demonstrators forcibly entered the PM House. Inside, protesters vandalized portraits of Sheikh Hasina and her late father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and inflicted substantial damage to the property. In a dramatic display of defiance, some individuals raided the kitchen, consuming available food, while others took valuable items from the residence. The parliament building, too, was not spared from the unrest. A large group of students breached the legislative chambers, occupying seats and staging mock sessions. They removed portraits and photographs of Sheikh Hasina and other Awami League leaders, further intensifying the display of discontent.

The violence and destruction extended beyond the confines of these buildings. Protesters climbed on and damaged statues of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, symbolizing their frustration with the outgoing government. Celebrations broke out across Dhaka, with millions taking to the streets to express their dissatisfaction. The scale and intensity of the protests mark a significant escalation in the political crisis gripping Bangladesh. The demonstrations come in the wake of a brutal crackdown by security forces on previous protests, which had already claimed numerous lives.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing clashes between protesters and security forces, and heightened fears of further violence. The unrest underscores the deep-seated discontent with the current administration and raises serious questions about the stability of Bangladesh’s political landscape. As the country grapples with the fallout from these unprecedented demonstrations, the international community watches closely, concerned about the potential for further escalation and its impact on regional stability.
