WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested while visiting the United States.
In a statement, Trump said he would not allow Netanyahu to be detained during his stay in the country. He added that, in his view, Iranian leaders should face arrest instead, accusing them of being responsible for bloodshed and destruction.
Trump also referred to the conflict with Iran and claimed that 52,000 protesters had been killed. The remarks came after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said legal options were being examined regarding the possibility of Netanyahu’s arrest if he visits the city.
Mamdani said that, following the International Criminal Court’s decision to seek Netanyahu’s arrest on allegations of war crimes, his place should be “The Hague”. He noted that Netanyahu is expected to travel to New York in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
