DHAKA: Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Imran Haider, met Vice Chancellor of the University of Dhaka, Prof Dr A. B. M. Obaidul Islam, at the university on Tuesday, where both sides discussed ways to strengthen educational cooperation, promote research collaboration, and expand faculty and student exchange programs.
During the meeting, the High Commissioner briefed the Vice Chancellor on the growing interest among Bangladeshi students in the Allama Iqbal Scholarships offered under the Pakistan-Bangladesh Knowledge Corridor initiative. Both sides agreed that education remained one of the strongest foundations for promoting mutual understanding, encouraging collaboration and reinforcing the longstanding ties between the people of Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Later, the High Commissioner and the Vice Chancellor jointly inaugurated a Pakistan High Commission-sponsored computer laboratory and renovated classroom facilities at the Urdu Department of the University of Dhaka.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof Dr Islam said the Urdu Department, established on 1 July 1921, was one of the university’s oldest academic departments and had made significant contributions to the study of language, literature and culture for more than a century. He appreciated the Pakistan High Commission’s contribution towards the development of the department.
In his remarks, Mr Haider said the initiative reflected the shared commitment of both countries to advancing education, promoting cultural affinities and investing in the future of young people. He thanked the University of Dhaka for preserving and nurturing its Urdu Department, describing it as a testament to the institution’s commitment to linguistic diversity, literary scholarship and cultural exchange.
He also wished the faculty and students continued success in their academic pursuits and expressed confidence that educational and cultural cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh would continue to expand.
