MANILA: Pakistan has expressed concern over escalating tensions in the Middle East and called on all parties to exercise restraint, while reaffirming its support for dialogue and diplomatic efforts to ease the crisis.
Speaking at the Foreign Office’s weekly briefing, spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said Pakistan was deeply concerned by continued threats from Yemen’s Houthi movement against Saudi Arabia and strongly condemned declarations targeting commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
He said threats to merchant vessels posed a serious risk to regional stability and global trade, adding that Pakistan remained committed to safeguarding its maritime interests. Such actions, he said, were a clear violation of international law and established maritime principles.
Andrabi said Pakistan would continue to support negotiations and diplomacy as the preferred means of resolving tensions in the Middle East.
The spokesperson also said Iran’s interior minister had recently met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Asim Munir during his visit to Pakistan. He added that Dar had also held meetings with several foreign ministers on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum.
Turning to Afghanistan, Andrabi reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of friendly countries, while accusing the Taliban administration of providing support to militant groups.
He said terrorist safe havens continued to exist inside Afghanistan and warned that support for militant organisations posed a threat to regional peace. Andrabi added that thousands of Pakistanis had lost their lives in terrorist attacks and called on the international community to hold the Taliban authorities accountable over the issue.
