NEW DELHI: Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi strongly criticized the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over allegations that security forces used pellet guns during a student protest in New Delhi, claiming that excessive force had been used against demonstrators.
Gandhi made the remarks after meeting protesting students and presenting an injured student before the media as evidence of what he described as the harsh response of authorities. He alleged that pellet guns were used during a demonstration held at Jantar Mantar on July 20, leaving several protesters injured.
The Congress leader claimed that one student suffered an eye injury after security personnel fired pellet ammunition during the protest. He accused the authorities of using force against peaceful demonstrators and said the incident reflected growing concerns over the handling of student protests.
Gandhi said the students’ three demands were “non-negotiable” and called for the immediate removal of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He argued that shifting the minister to another government position would not address the concerns raised by protesters.
The opposition leader further alleged that Pradhan had become a symbol of corruption and what he described as the decline of India’s education system. He said the government needed to take responsibility and respond to the demands of students rather than relying on force to manage public demonstrations.
Indian media reports said medical records from Safdarjung Hospital showed that several protesters had sustained injuries consistent with pellet strikes. One student was reported to have suffered wounds on the back and elbow, while another was said to be facing the possibility of losing eyesight due to an eye injury.
