UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan expressed deep concern over the continued escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, warning that attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure had created a severe humanitarian crisis and threatened global food and energy security.
Addressing the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said the ongoing hostilities had caused unacceptable suffering for ordinary people and had affected humanitarian efforts. He condemned the damage caused to civilians, civilian facilities and humanitarian workers, stressing that all parties must respect their responsibilities under international humanitarian law.
The ambassador said the consequences of the conflict were not limited to the countries directly involved. He noted that disruptions to food and energy supplies had created wider challenges, particularly for developing nations already facing economic pressures. He said vulnerable populations around the world continued to bear the impact of prolonged instability.
Ambassador Asim emphasized that there was no military solution to the conflict and said a lasting settlement could only be achieved through serious, sustained and meaningful dialogue. He expressed concern that despite the passage of time, efforts to end the conflict and establish durable peace had not produced the desired outcome.
The Pakistani envoy referred to the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2774 and regretted that, 17 months after its approval, the objectives of ending hostilities and moving towards a permanent peace remained unfulfilled. He called for renewed international efforts to advance diplomacy and prevent further loss of life.
