KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced a Rs14 billion citywide road rehabilitation program that will upgrade 139 roads across all districts, in what officials describe as one of the largest infrastructure initiatives undertaken by the civic body.
The announcement was made by Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab while chairing a high-level review meeting at KMC headquarters. The program includes the reconstruction and rehabilitation of major roads, drainage networks, water supply lines and street lighting aimed at improving transport infrastructure and municipal services across the city.
Wahab said the initiative marked a new phase in Karachi’s development, with long-neglected infrastructure being restored through planned investment and transparent implementation. He said the projects were intended not only to rebuild roads but also to improve public services, restore confidence in civic institutions and enhance the quality of life for residents.
The mayor credited the Sindh government for supporting the program, saying large-scale development projects were being carried out to address longstanding civic challenges and modernize the city’s infrastructure.
Wahab directed all departments involved to ensure transparency, high construction standards and the timely completion of every scheme. He said he would personally oversee both the procurement process and project execution to ensure all works are completed within one year.
Director General Technical Services Tariq Mughal told the meeting that the tendering process for civil works, including road rehabilitation, drainage improvements, water supply upgrades and electrical infrastructure, had been completed in accordance with procurement rules. Work orders are expected to be issued shortly, with construction beginning in phases across the city.
Financial Adviser Gulzar Ali Abro said the program includes rehabilitation of several key roads, including Government MNO Technical College Road and Fazal Illahi Hospital Road in Landhi, internal roads in Korangi Industrial Area and Shareefabad, Hira Lal Road, Siddiq Wahab Road, Kashmir Road, Johar Road, Nishtar Road and Teen Hatti Road, along with numerous other roads across Karachi’s town municipal corporations.
The development package also includes a citywide street lighting program covering major roads and intersections, including Shahrah-e-Attar, Shahrah-e-Saadi Road, Fatima Jinnah Road, M.A. Jinnah Road, Shahrah-e-Liaquat, Liaquat Flyover, Ayesha Manzil Flyover, Sohrab Goth Flyover, Shahrah-e-Ibn Sina, Bunder Road, Bacha Khan Flyover, Abul Hassan Isphani Road, Sir Shah Suleman Road and key corridors in Korangi and Landhi.
Wahab said the program would improve road safety, strengthen drainage infrastructure, enhance mobility and provide better-lit public spaces, describing it as another significant step in Karachi’s ongoing urban renewal.
The meeting was attended by senior KMC officials, including Financial Adviser Gulzar Ali Abro, Director General Technical Services Tariq Mughal, Director Media Daniyal Siyal and other officers.
