LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the construction of 800 mini dams in the Pothohar region as part of the provincial government’s efforts to conserve rainwater, improve water management and address growing challenges related to water availability.
Chairing a meeting on agriculture transformation and water management in Lahore, the chief minister reviewed progress on ongoing initiatives aimed at conserving water resources and improving groundwater management across Punjab.
Maryam Nawaz directed the departments of Agriculture, Irrigation, Housing and Local Government to work together under a unified “One Window Water Security” framework to ensure better coordination and faster implementation of water-related projects.
She said effective water management was essential for strengthening agriculture, supporting farmers and ensuring sustainable development in the province. The construction of mini dams in Pothohar is expected to help store rainwater, improve groundwater levels and provide additional water resources for agricultural activities.
The chief minister stressed the need for modern approaches to water conservation and called for closer cooperation among relevant departments to maximise the benefits of such initiatives. She said integrated planning and efficient use of available water resources were key to meeting future agricultural and environmental needs.
Officials briefed the meeting on measures being taken for groundwater preservation and water security across Punjab. The meeting also discussed ways to improve irrigation systems and introduce sustainable practices to support the province’s farming sector.
The Punjab government has placed water conservation and agricultural reforms among its key priorities, with officials saying the planned mini dams would contribute to long-term resource management and help communities in areas facing water challenges.
