ISLAMABAD: Pakistani authorities have issued a flood alert after India released water from the Salal Dam for the eleventh consecutive time, with officials warning that a surge of around 90,000 cusecs is expected to enter Pakistan.
According to officials, water flows across most of the country’s rivers remain within normal limits. However, low- to medium-level flooding continues at several points along the Indus River, while water levels at both Tarbela and Mangla dams have continued to rise.
Authorities said Sukkur Barrage is experiencing a medium-level flood, while low-level flooding persists at Kalabagh, Chashma and Guddu barrages. A low-level flood has also been recorded at Head Balloki on the Ravi River. Water flows at most monitoring points on the Jhelum, Chenab, Sutlej, Ravi and Kabul rivers remain normal.
Tarbela Dam’s water level has risen to 1,539 feet, taking the reservoir to 89% of its storage capacity, while Mangla Dam has exceeded 1,196 feet and is now 57% full.
Relevant authorities said they were closely monitoring river conditions and had instructed district administrations and emergency response agencies to remain on high alert.
Meanwhile, the Guddu Barrage Control Room reported that water levels at the barrage were continuing to decline, indicating an improving flood situation. Water inflow at Guddu was recorded at 336,138 cusecs, with an outflow of 299,209 cusecs. Officials said the river flow had fallen by nearly 89,965 cusecs over the past 24 hours and expected conditions at the barrage to return to normal within the next 48 hours.
