KARACHI: Karachi police have registered a case against eight transgender people after a group allegedly entered the Boat Basin police station, threw stones and damaged vehicles, Safe City equipment and other property.
According to police, the case was registered on behalf of the state in connection with an incident that occurred several days ago. Three transgender people have been arrested so far, officials said.
Police said a large group entered the station in an agitated state, allegedly abused staff and broke the windows of parked vehicles. When police officers attempted to intervene, the group allegedly damaged the doors of the Safe City room.
According to the FIR, the protesters also allegedly assaulted people who had come to the police station seeking assistance despite being asked to stop.
The case names eight transgender people, while police said further action would be taken as the investigation progresses.
Police officials said the incident followed the arrest of several beggars under the Beggary Act on the instructions of an assistant commissioner. During the arrests, one transgender person reportedly suffered a nose injury and began bleeding.
Police said members of the transgender community subsequently accused officers of assaulting the individual and allegedly attempted to portray the incident as violence.
The police have registered charges relating to the alleged damage to public property and obstruction at the police station. The investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and determine the responsibility of those involved.
