Pakistan’s environmental crisis is no longer a distant concern confined to scientific reports and climate conferences. It is unfolding visibly across its landscapes, affecting water resources, urban life and ecological systems. The alarming decline of tree cover around Rawal Lake, where nearly half of the surrounding greenery has disappeared over the past two decades, represents a serious warning about the country’s environmental direction. Rawal Lake is far more than a scenic landmark between Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Created in 1962 by constructing a dam across the Korang River, the reservoir has become an essential source of water for the twin cities while also supporting a diverse ecological system.
Surrounded by the Margalla Hills National Park, Shakarparian and the Potohar Plateau, the lake forms an important part of the region’s environmental identity. Its degradation therefore represents not only the loss of trees but also a threat to water security, biodiversity and climate resilience. A comparison of satellite imagery from 2004 and 2024 released by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has highlighted a dramatic reduction in the green belt surrounding Rawal Lake. The changes visible through modern remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies reveal a troubling pattern of environmental decline.
The reduction in tree cover has been accompanied by visible changes in water color, suggesting growing pressure on the lake’s aquatic ecosystem from pollution, sedimentation and human activity. The disappearance of forests around water bodies carries consequences that extend far beyond the loss of vegetation. Trees act as natural protectors of watersheds. Their roots hold soil together, reduce erosion, improve groundwater recharge and regulate the movement of rainwater. When forests disappear, rainfall carries greater amounts of soil and pollutants into reservoirs, accelerating silt accumulation and reducing the capacity and lifespan of water storage systems. For a country already struggling with limited forest cover, the decline around environmentally sensitive areas is particularly concerning.
Pakistan remains among the nations with the lowest forest coverage globally, with forests accounting for only a small proportion of total land area. Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that significantly greater forest cover is needed to maintain ecological stability, regulate climate patterns and protect natural resources. The consequences of losing tree cover are becoming increasingly visible as Pakistan faces worsening climate challenges. The country has experienced more frequent heatwaves, extreme rainfall events, floods and droughts in recent years. Forests and green spaces provide natural protection against these threats by absorbing carbon dioxide, moderating temperatures and supporting healthier ecosystems. Their destruction weakens the ability of communities and landscapes to withstand climate shocks.
Islamabad has long been recognized as one of South Asia’s greener capitals, but rapid urban expansion is placing increasing pressure on its natural environment. Housing developments, roads, commercial projects and expanding infrastructure have gradually replaced many natural landscapes with concrete surfaces. This transformation reduces the ability of soil to absorb rainfall, increasing surface runoff, urban flooding and groundwater depletion. The condition of Rawal Lake also highlights a broader problem: development without sufficient environmental planning. Economic growth and environmental protection should not be viewed as competing objectives.
Around the world, successful cities have adopted approaches based on green and blue infrastructure, integrating forests, rivers, wetlands and urban parks into development strategies. These examples demonstrate that modern cities can expand while preserving their natural foundations. The changing appearance of Rawal Lake’s water provides another important indication of environmental stress. Scientists use variations in water colour captured through satellite imagery to assess factors such as suspended sediments, algae growth and pollution levels. Untreated sewage, industrial waste, agricultural chemicals and plastic pollution can reduce water quality, threaten aquatic life and create risks for public health. Recent cleanup activities around the lake have exposed the seriousness of the waste management challenge.
The discovery of medical waste, plastic materials and other hazardous debris along the shoreline reflects a disturbing disregard for environmental protection. Medical waste, in particular, carries significant risks because it can introduce harmful pathogens and toxic substances into natural ecosystems. Rawal Lake’s ecological importance extends beyond water supply. It serves as a habitat for fish, aquatic plants, insects, mammals and numerous bird species. Migratory birds travelling from Central Asia visit the area during winter, making it an important site for biodiversity conservation. However, deforestation, pollution and uncontrolled human activity are steadily reducing the quality of these habitats.
Pakistan possesses the scientific tools required to monitor and protect its natural resources. Satellite imagery, GIS mapping, drone technology, artificial intelligence and remote sensing can provide authorities with accurate information about land-use changes, illegal construction, forest loss and pollution patterns. The challenge is not the absence of technology but the need for stronger policies, better coordination and consistent enforcement. Saving Rawal Lake requires a comprehensive conservation strategy. A protected ecological buffer zone around the reservoir, strict action against illegal construction, effective sewage management and large-scale plantation of native tree species are essential measures.
A country facing climate vulnerability cannot continue sacrificing natural resources for short-term development gains. The future of Rawal Lake depends on choices made today. With science-based policies, stronger environmental laws, modern monitoring systems and public commitment, the reservoir can be restored as a symbol of ecological balance and sustainable development. But if neglect continues, Rawal Lake may become another example of how unchecked urbanization can permanently damage the natural systems upon which human life depends. The warning from Rawal Lake is clear: protecting nature is not an obstacle to progress. It is the condition upon which lasting progress depends.
