ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s adviser Rana Sanaullah has confirmed that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif instructed Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders not to respond to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, saying the party strongly disagreed with Naqvi’s remarks and his manner of speaking.
Speaking on Geo News programme Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath, Sanaullah said Naqvi’s comments were “meaningless” and lacked context, while his style of communication was also a matter of serious concern.
Sanaullah said Naqvi would appear before Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif if summoned, adding that the prime minister had the authority to question members of his cabinet. He said Naqvi had met the prime minister the previous day and suggested that their conversation may have included discussion of his remarks.
He said further details would emerge during the next cabinet meeting.
The PML-N leader said it appeared Naqvi had failed to clearly convey what he intended to say, resulting in the discussion moving in different directions.
Sanaullah defended Pakistan’s parliamentary and constitutional system, saying it had played a role in keeping the country united. He argued that the system itself was not fundamentally flawed, but that the problem lay in its implementation.
He said the administration, judiciary and legislature should work within the limits prescribed by the Constitution and claimed that many problems could be resolved within a year if institutions properly performed their constitutional responsibilities.
Sanaullah said he had never claimed that the hybrid system was functioning perfectly. Referring to Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s comments about the hybrid system, he said the term meant that military and political leadership could consult each other while making decisions.
He also rejected reports that the establishment had set any deadline for the creation of new administrative units, describing such claims as “stories and rumours”.
On relations with the Pakistan Peoples Party, Sanaullah said the PPP had started raising concerns following the election results, arguing that the party was trying to strengthen its political narrative and morale among its supporters.
He said the PPP was not part of the federal cabinet but remained involved in government affairs in other ways. He added that the coalition agreement between the PML-N and PPP contained 16 to 17 points and would continue to be implemented for as long as the alliance remained intact.
PPP leader Nadeem Afzal Chan, speaking on the same programme, criticised the government and said the prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir had no real powers. He also questioned the authenticity of electoral mandates and criticised the PML-N leadership.
