KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to launch an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in September and introduce 50 new double-decker buses in Karachi in October as part of efforts to modernise public transport in the province.
The decisions were taken during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon.
A department spokesperson said the government also planned to introduce 1,000 electric buses in phases from the end of this year. New People’s Bus Service routes will also be launched between Larkana and Qambar, and Qambar and Shahdadkot.
Memon was given a detailed briefing on various ongoing and planned transport projects during the meeting.
He directed officials to complete construction of all depots for the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project within the निर्धारित timeline and instructed authorities to activate the new People’s Bus Service routes between Larkana, Qambar and Shahdadkot as soon as possible.
The provincial minister reiterated that the Sindh government’s EV taxi service would be launched in September, while 1,000 electric buses would gradually be added to the public transport network.
He also said 50 new double-decker buses would arrive in Karachi in October, providing citizens with modern and improved transport facilities.
Memon said the provincial government wanted to provide citizens with modern, safe and environmentally friendly public transport services and improve the overall quality of urban mobility.
The planned expansion of electric and double-decker bus services is expected to strengthen public transport options while supporting Sindh’s efforts to move towards cleaner and more sustainable urban transportation.
