KARACHI: A labour leader has called for a high-level investigation into alleged financial irregularities, corruption and administrative failures in the Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI), urging government and accountability bodies to examine the institution’s affairs.
SESSI labour representative Naushad Akhtar has submitted an application to the SESSI commissioner, Sindh government, National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other relevant authorities, seeking an independent inquiry into alleged misuse of funds and governance issues.
In his application, Akhtar claimed that thousands of industrial and commercial establishments in Sindh remained unregistered with the social security system despite legal requirements, leaving a large number of workers and their families without access to medical treatment, pensions and other benefits.
He called for a detailed review of the assets, sources of income, foreign travel records, educational credentials, annual declarations, financial dealings and service records of officers in grade 17 and above.
The labour leader also sought an investigation into alleged ghost employees, absentee staff and officials who were reportedly drawing salaries while staying abroad.
He demanded that immigration records, bank details, attendance registers, salary bills, leave records and other official documents be compared to identify those responsible and recover any losses caused to public funds.
Akhtar further called for an inquiry into the reported HIV infections among more than 200 children at a SESSI hospital, saying that if negligence or wrongdoing by any official or medical staff was established, those responsible should be held accountable under the law.
He said a transparent and impartial investigation would help restore public confidence in the institution, protect workers’ rights, promote accountability and ensure better use of public resources.
Akhtar, who said he had three decades of experience in labour affairs, also offered cooperation to investigative agencies during the inquiry process.
