KARACHI: A Youm-e-Istehsal (Kashmir Exploitation Day) walk was held at the Deputy Commissioner West Office on Wednesday to mark the sixth anniversary of India’s August 5, 2019 decision regarding Jammu and Kashmir, with officials describing the move as a violation of fundamental rights and international principles.
Speaking at the walk, Deputy Commissioner West Ali Zulfiqar Memon said the events of August 5, 2019 had left a deep impact on the people of Kashmir and described the day as a “dark chapter” in the region’s history.
He said India’s decision had created further challenges for Kashmir and claimed that the move would remain a subject of accountability in the future. He added that the issue highlighted concerns over constitutional rights and international commitments.
The deputy commissioner said India had revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir by removing Articles 370 and 35A of its Constitution, arguing that the decision had altered the region’s political and legal position.
He maintained that the action was also contrary to the principles of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which calls for the protection of fundamental freedoms and dignity of people.
Memon further said the decision had raised concerns among other regions in India that hold special constitutional provisions, creating uncertainty over the future of similar arrangements.
The walk was attended by additional deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, mukhtiarkars, district administration officials, health department representatives and a large number of polio workers.
The participants carried banners highlighting solidarity with Kashmiris and called for respect for human rights and international law.
