KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah dismissed speculation about the creation of new provinces, saying the matter had already been rejected by the country’s legislatures and there was no such development under consideration.
Speaking to reporters after attending the Mining Technical Conference 2026, the chief minister said the existing legal framework clearly defined matters related to provinces. He said proposals for creating new provinces had previously been discussed and rejected by assemblies.
“There is no such situation developing,” Murad Ali Shah said, adding that there were currently no plans for the formation of new provinces.
Talking about the mining sector, the chief minister said the successful development of Thar coalfields had demonstrated Pakistan’s potential to utilize its natural resources. He said the Thar model could be replicated in other parts of the country to explore mineral wealth and promote economic growth.
Murad Ali Shah said responsible resource development, investment and modern technology could help unlock the country’s mineral potential while creating employment opportunities and supporting local communities.
Responding to questions about recent protests, the chief minister said peaceful demonstration was a constitutional right of citizens. However, he said road blockages caused difficulties for the public and affected daily life. He said authorities had taken action only after roads were closed, with the objective of restoring traffic flow and reducing inconvenience faced by commuters.
The chief minister stressed that maintaining public order and protecting citizens’ rights remained important responsibilities of the government. He said development initiatives and effective governance were necessary to address challenges facing the province and the country.
