SANA’A: At least 30 Yemeni government troops were killed in attacks targeting military camps in the provinces of Marib and Hadramout on Thursday, according to government sources, who warned that the death toll could rise further.
The Iran-aligned Houthi movement later claimed responsibility for missile and drone strikes, saying it had targeted Saudi military deployments in the two provinces. The group said the attacks were carried out against what it described as Saudi troop concentrations in Al Ruwayk, Al Abr and Al Thaniyah areas using ballistic missiles and drones.
The Houthis claimed that hundreds of Saudi-aligned fighters had been killed or wounded and said military camps, weapons storage facilities and vehicles had been destroyed. The claims could not be independently verified. The group said the operation was launched after it detected what it described as a major Saudi military build-up ahead of a possible escalation against areas under Houthi control.
Yemen’s Health Minister directed medical facilities in Marib and Hadramout to increase preparedness for treating injured soldiers. He condemned the attacks, saying military positions in Al Ruwayk and Al Abr had been targeted.
The US Mission to Yemen expressed condolences to the families of Yemeni soldiers killed in the attacks and described the strikes as another example of what it called Houthi terrorism against the Yemeni people.
The latest violence added to the instability in Yemen, where years of conflict have caused widespread destruction and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. The Houthis have declared a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea since last month, saying it was a response to what they called a Saudi siege on Yemen. Riyadh has rejected the allegation.
