MAKKAH: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said the newly signed Mecca defence agreement between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye was not directed against any country and instead reflected the three nations’ commitment to regional security and the right to self-defence under international law.
In a statement posted on his X account, Erdoğan said he had travelled to Mecca at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. During his visit, he held talks with the Saudi leader and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The three leaders signed the joint defence agreement in Mecca. The pact was aimed at strengthening security and defence cooperation and improving the collective defence capabilities of the three countries. It also sought to establish a stronger framework for cooperation at a time of growing security concerns across the region.
Erdoğan said the agreement would encourage joint projects in the defence industry and expand cooperation in the fight against terrorism. He described defence cooperation as an important part of efforts to protect regional stability while making clear that the agreement was not intended to threaten another state.
The Turkish president said the pact reaffirmed the right to self-defence recognized under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. He stressed that the agreement should be understood within the framework of international law and the sovereign right of states to protect their security.
Erdoğan also said the agreement remained open to friendly countries in the region that shared the goal of peace, stability and prosperity. The provision suggested that the three countries viewed the pact as a wider platform for security cooperation rather than a closed military arrangement.
