KARACHI: The Contractors Association of Pakistan (CAP) has urged the Sindh government to immediately clear outstanding payments to contractors, warning that prolonged delays were disrupting development projects and putting thousands of jobs at risk.
CAP Chairman Altaf Hussain Rajput, speaking at a press conference in Karachi, said contractors had continued working on public infrastructure schemes despite rising construction costs and growing financial challenges. However, he said many projects had now slowed down or come to a halt because payments were not being released on time.
Rajput said the construction sector, one of the country’s major contributors to economic activity and employment, was facing a severe financial strain as contractors struggled to manage operational expenses, pay workers and maintain ongoing projects.
He said infrastructure development remained closely linked with economic growth, as the sector supported road networks, public facilities, transport systems and thousands of related businesses. Delays in clearing contractors’ dues, he added, were affecting not only project completion but also employment opportunities across Sindh.
The CAP chairman called on the provincial government to treat the issue as an urgent matter and release all verified pending payments without further delay. He also demanded the introduction of a more efficient payment system to prevent similar disruptions in future public-sector projects.
Rajput said timely payments would allow contractors to resume stalled work, protect jobs and restore confidence among businesses involved in the construction industry. He stressed that the sector required stronger policy support and sustained investment, arguing that a healthy construction industry could stimulate economic activity and contribute to long-term development.
The CAP chairman warned that continued uncertainty over payments could discourage private investment in public works and create further challenges for improving essential infrastructure and services across the province.
