KARACHI: Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar has rejected allegations of bad faith by the provincial government in the Mir Raza case, saying a new medical team was proposed after the police surgeon raised concerns over the postmortem process.
Speaking on Geo News programme Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath, Lanjar said he was not questioning anyone’s credibility but claimed that the Karachi police surgeon had neither examined the postmortem report nor seen the body before making a statement about the case.
He said doctors from Karachi were also included in the new medical board and that the Karachi police surgeon had been appointed its convener.
The minister said it was still necessary to establish through investigation whether the incident was a suicide or a murder. He added that the government’s priority was to ensure justice for the bereaved family.
Lanjar said the court had directed the health secretary and police surgeon to constitute a medical board, adding that the board trusted by the victim’s parents would ultimately be accepted.
He said the Karachi police surgeon had also been given the authority to include additional doctors in the board and expand its membership if necessary.
According to the minister, if the parents had written to the health secretary, the existing medical board could have been retained.
Lanjar said the postmortem had been conducted by a medico-legal officer working under the police surgeon. He questioned why the police surgeon had not formally raised concerns after receiving the postmortem report.
The minister said the police surgeon had three days after the postmortem to raise any questions or objections and should have communicated them in writing. He claimed the postmortem report remained with the Karachi police surgeon for three days before being forwarded.
Lanjar said the police surgeon was the head of the department and that the report had initially been sent to her office.
He maintained that the police surgeon had not communicated her concerns formally in writing. Any charge sheet submitted in the case, he said, would be based on evidence gathered during the investigation.
