LUCKNOW: An Indian woman has been accused of using dating apps and social media to befriend men, secretly obtain their private photographs and videos, and allegedly extort more than Rs600m from them in a blackmail scheme in Uttar Pradesh.
According to Indian media reports, the alleged network came to light after a complaint was filed by a High Court lawyer. The woman was identified in the complaint as Palvi Singh Rajput. Police were told that Rajput allegedly contacted people through dating apps and social media, developed friendships with them and arranged meetings. During these encounters, she allegedly obtained their private photographs and videos.
The complaint alleges that the material was later used to blackmail the victims. Those who refused to pay were allegedly threatened with being implicated in serious criminal cases, including rape and attempted murder.
According to the complainant, more than Rs600m was allegedly collected from victims through the network. At least five people have reportedly been jailed following cases allegedly filed by the woman. Victims claimed that the threat of criminal proceedings, further legal action and damage to their reputations was used to pressure them into paying money.
The woman allegedly operated multiple social media accounts under different names and was assisted by two women and two men, according to the complaint. The case has prompted a police investigation into the alleged extortion network and the circumstances surrounding the criminal complaints filed against the victims.
Police have not yet established the allegations as proven facts. Authorities said the investigation was continuing and that the claims against the woman and other alleged members of the network would be examined as part of the inquiry. The case has also raised concerns over the risks of sharing private material with people met through social media and dating platforms, particularly where such material can later be used for intimidation or extortion.
