SRINAGAR: Indian forces and investigating agencies intensified raids, surveillance and restrictions across Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, with searches and detentions reported in several areas.
According to the Kashmir Media Service, Indian forces and investigating agencies conducted searches at 26 locations in Sopore and adjoining areas of Baramulla district. The searches were reportedly carried out in cases registered under India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against activists associated with Jamaat-e-Islami.
Heavy deployments of Indian forces were made around the locations where the searches took place. The latest action came amid continued security operations and restrictions in the disputed territory.
All Parties Hurriyat Conference spokesman Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas, speaking in Srinagar, appealed to the international community to intervene against what he described as violations of international law and norms by the Indian government.
Minhas urged the international community to take notice of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, which Pakistan and India have disputed for decades. He called for greater international attention to the rights and freedoms of people living in the territory.
The APHC also welcomed Pakistan’s continued support for the Kashmir cause. It described Islamabad’s position as a source of strength and encouragement for people in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum raised concern over rising unemployment among young people in the territory. It described unemployment as a growing social and economic challenge and called for urgent measures to address the problem.
Separately, IIOJK Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed frustration over the continued delay in the restoration of statehood. He said the failure by authorities in New Delhi to fulfil their commitment had weakened public confidence in the region.
