SURAT: Four senior doctors have been suspended for six months following the suspected suicide of a 30-year-old postgraduate doctor at a government medical college hostel in the Indian city of Surat.
Indian media reports said Harsh Pandya, a resident doctor in the microbiology department at New Civil Hospital, was found dead in his hostel room. He had been working at the hospital for the past six months while pursuing postgraduate studies and had recently become engaged.
Following his death, four senior resident doctors were accused of harassing and ragging Pandya and were suspended for six months, according to Indian media.
Pandya’s father, Dr Subhash Pandya, said he received a call from his son’s friend on Sunday morning asking him to come to Surat immediately. He said his son had no problems with his studies, although there had occasionally been disagreements between senior and junior doctors over work-related matters in the department.
According to reports, Pandya had been scheduled to perform an emergency duty at New Civil Hospital the previous day. When he failed to report for duty, a senior doctor tried to contact him by phone but found that it was switched off.
A junior doctor living in the hostel was then sent to check on Pandya. When the colleague reached his room, the door was locked from inside. Repeated calls and attempts to open the door received no response.
Security staff were called and the door was eventually forced open. Pandya was found unresponsive inside the room and was later declared dead.
Police investigations reportedly found allegations that four senior resident doctors had been repeatedly harassing Pandya. The four doctors have since been suspended from the hospital, hostel and all teaching activities for six months.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Pandya’s death and the allegations against the suspended doctors.
