TEHRAN: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said stronger relations between Iran and Pakistan could contribute to greater security across the region as the two neighbors discussed bilateral cooperation and the changing regional situation.
Pezeshkian made the remarks after meeting Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in Tehran on Wednesday. The meeting formed part of Naqvi’s diplomatic engagements in Iran, where he held talks with senior Iranian officials.
Naqvi had earlier met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Iranian counterpart, Mohsen Momeni. Iranian media reported that the meetings focused on developments in the region and ways to strengthen cooperation between Pakistan and Iran.
Pezeshkian said closer relations between the two countries could play a role in promoting regional security. Pakistan and Iran share a long border and have repeatedly emphasized the importance of cooperation on security, trade and border management.
The latest meetings came as diplomatic efforts continued to reduce tensions between Iran and the United States. The regional situation has remained a major concern for neighboring countries, which have sought to prevent further escalation and encourage dialogue.
Pakistan has maintained that disputes should be resolved through diplomacy and that regional stability was in the interests of all countries. Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had earlier said that Washington and Tehran appeared to be moving towards an agreement.
Speaking to US media, Asif said developments over the previous two or three days suggested that the two sides were getting closer to some form of settlement or peace agreement. He said a durable peace between Iran and the United States would serve the interests of the entire region.
