ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the European Union reaffirmed their commitment to democratic values, the rule of law and the protection of human rights, while stressing the need for stronger cooperation and engagement between the two sides.
The understanding was reached during a meeting between Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights Azam Nazeer Tarar and Member of the European Parliament Ondrej Dostál in Islamabad on Tuesday.
The two sides discussed Pakistan-EU relations and explored ways to further strengthen positive and constructive engagement. Parliamentary cooperation also featured prominently in the discussion, with both sides highlighting the importance of greater interaction between their respective legislative institutions.
Tarar said Pakistan attached great importance to democratic values, the constitutional system, the rule of law and the protection of human rights. He stressed that strong democratic institutions were essential for political stability and effective governance.
The minister also underlined the role of parliamentary engagement in strengthening cooperation at both national and international levels. He said closer interaction between parliamentarians could help develop greater understanding and provide opportunities to exchange views on matters of mutual interest.
The discussion came as Pakistan and the European Union continued efforts to maintain constructive relations and broaden engagement across political and institutional areas. Dostál appreciated Tarar’s efforts and initiatives in the fields of constitutional and legal affairs. He acknowledged the importance of continued engagement on issues related to democratic institutions, legislation and the rule of law.
The meeting also highlighted the role of parliamentary diplomacy in supporting broader bilateral relations. Regular exchanges between elected representatives can provide an additional channel for dialogue on governance, legal reforms and human rights.
