Nature rarely reveals all its gifts at once. For centuries, Sindh has drawn its strength from the Indus, fertile plains, agriculture and the sea. Beneath that landscape, however, lie resources that have repeatedly altered the province’s economic prospects. The reported progress towards recovering lithium from geothermal brine in Khairpur, following a recent gas discovery, offers another reason to look more closely at what lies beneath the land. Khairpur Mirs is known for its date orchards, historic heritage and proximity to the Indus. It is also becoming increasingly important on Pakistan’s energy map. In March 2026, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited announced a gas discovery at the Sahito One well in the Khewari Exploration Licence in Khairpur district.
The well, drilled to about 3,870 meters, recorded an initial flow rate of roughly 17.2 million standard cubic feet of gas a day. The discovery underlined the continuing geological potential of the area. The prospect of extracting lithium from geothermal brine takes that potential into a different and potentially more consequential field. Cooperation between OGDCL and the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology on developing the necessary technology suggests that Pakistan is beginning to consider not only what lies underground, but how science can make those resources useful. Lithium has become one of the strategic materials of the modern economy. It is central to rechargeable batteries used in mobile phones, computers, electric vehicles and renewable-energy storage systems.
As countries expand solar and wind power, the ability to store electricity efficiently is becoming increasingly important. Demand for battery materials is therefore tied not only to consumer technology but also to the wider transition towards cleaner energy. If lithium extraction from Khairpur’s geothermal brine proves technically and commercially viable, the opportunity could extend far beyond the recovery of a raw mineral. Pakistan could begin developing a wider industrial chain involving refining, chemical processing, battery materials, energy storage and, eventually, battery and electric-vehicle manufacturing. That would be far more valuable than simply extracting a resource and sending it abroad.
Natural wealth becomes an economic asset when it generates research, technology, skilled employment, productive industries and better public services. The real test of Khairpur’s lithium potential will therefore not be the size of the headline announcing it, but whether the discovery can contribute to a sustainable industrial ecosystem. Sindh has a strong foundation on which to build. The province already possesses natural gas, coal, oil, salt and other minerals, alongside extensive agricultural land, a major river system, a long coastline and enormous solar potential. Yet the presence of resources has not always translated into comparable improvements in the lives of the communities living closest to them.
If lithium development moves forward, local people should be among its principal beneficiaries. Investment in technical education, vocational training, water supply, healthcare, roads and digital connectivity should accompany resource development. Universities and research institutions in Sindh should be brought into the process so that local graduates can contribute as geologists, engineers, environmental scientists, data specialists and technicians rather than watching another resource economy develop around them. The province also needs a much more systematic understanding of its geological wealth. Modern satellite imagery, remote sensing, geophysical surveys, drilling data and artificial intelligence can help map mineral potential with far greater precision than was possible in the past.
Sindh should consider establishing a comprehensive mineral intelligence program to identify what resources exist, where they are located, how much may be recoverable and what their economic and environmental costs would be. Such work would replace speculation with evidence. It would also help distinguish between a promising scientific indication and a proven commercial reserve. The presence of lithium does not, by itself, establish that a deposit can be profitably exploited. Concentration, recoverability, extraction technology, energy requirements, infrastructure, production costs, environmental effects and international prices will all determine whether the resource has genuine commercial value. Environmental safeguards must be treated with equal seriousness.
Extraction from geothermal brine requires careful monitoring of groundwater, water chemistry, salinity and reinjection processes. Any commercial development should be preceded by an independent environmental assessment, while water and ecological conditions should be monitored transparently throughout the life of a project. There is a wider lesson here. Sindh should stop thinking of its natural resources simply as commodities waiting to be removed from the ground. The province needs to become a place where geological discoveries lead to scientific research, industrial development and technological innovation. Khairpur offers a useful starting point.
The challenge is to connect these resources with human development rather than treating them as isolated discoveries. Pakistan has often spoken of becoming a resource-rich and industrial economy. The missing ingredient has frequently been the ability to move from extraction to value addition. A lithium opportunity should not become another example of exporting raw material while importing finished technology at a much higher cost. If the resource proves viable, Pakistan should seek to develop expertise and industrial capacity around it.
Governments change, commodity prices fluctuate and technologies evolve. Scientific institutions, universities and industry therefore need a framework that survives political cycles. Investment in geological research and technical education may not produce immediate headlines, but it can create the foundations of an economy capable of competing in new industries. The benefits should also reach beyond Khairpur. Genuine development in Sindh cannot be measured solely by the growth of Karachi. It must also be visible in the villages of Khairpur, the agricultural plains of Larkana, the coalfields of Thar, the river communities around Sukkur and the coastal districts of Badin and Thatta.
