KARACHI: The water supply to Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, has been restored following a brief suspension caused by a significant power breakdown. The interruption, which lasted 45 minutes, was traced to a failure at the Dhabeji Pumping Station, a crucial facility for the city’s water distribution network.
According to a spokesperson from the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB), all pumps at the Dhabeji Pumping Station ceased operation due to the power outage. This disruption led to a temporary halt in water supply to Karachi, affecting the city’s vast population. The Dhabeji Pumping Station, located in one of the most densely populated regions of the world, is integral to Karachi’s water supply system. The station is responsible for pumping water from distant sources to the city through an extensive and complex bulk conveyance system.
This system includes a network of canals, conduits, siphons, multi-stage pumping mechanisms, and filtration processes designed to ensure a steady and clean water supply. The Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) is tasked with managing the city’s water resources and sewerage systems. The organization focuses on delivering potable water to residents, maintaining sanitation, and addressing service shortfalls. Its responsibilities also include developing schemes to improve services and managing revenue collection to sustain economic viability.
