KARACHI: Dawood University of Engineering and Technology in Karachi has taken a significant step to promote local technology and reduce reliance on imports by establishing a Research Products Development Unit (RPDU).

The new unit was inaugurated by Engro Chairman Hussain Dawood at the National Aerospace Science and Technology Park (NASTP) in Karachi. The ceremony was attended by government officials, industry representatives, members of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, regulatory authorities, vice-chancellors, ORIC directors, faculty, and students.

During the event, the offices of four start-ups under the RPDU—HOAE, Dastkar, Epsilon Smart Solutions (ESS), and Cyber Guard—were inaugurated in a unique gesture by the mothers of team members, earning widespread appreciation from attendees.

Director ORIC, Dr Muhammad Faisal Khan, described the establishment of the RPDU as a milestone for innovation, invention, and commercialization. Chairman Hussain Dawood shared his entrepreneurial journey, advising young innovators to trust their abilities rather than fear failure. He also congratulated Dawood University for becoming the first institution to set up a unit within NASTP.

Vice-Chancellor Engineer Professor Dr Samreen Hussain explained that locating the RPDU outside the university campus provides start-ups with a corporate environment. She added that Dawood University will offer start-ups free office space for one year and cover their intellectual property costs.

Dr Samreen Hussain emphasized that the RPDU aims to develop products that can serve as alternatives to imported goods, encouraging collaboration and resource-sharing among universities nationwide, which could lead to significant public fund savings. The ceremony concluded with the Vice-Chancellor thanking participants, presenting commemorative shields, and hosting a networking lunch for guests.
