DHAKA: A major fire broke out at the cargo terminal of Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday, leading to the suspension of all flight operations and a large-scale emergency response. The blaze was reported at around 2:15 PM local time in the cargo village area of the airport, a key aviation hub for Bangladesh.
In a precautionary move, airport authorities immediately suspended all inbound and outbound flights and began moving aircraft to safe locations. Fire Service Spokesman Talha Bin Jasim confirmed that 25 firefighting units were dispatched to the airport after the alert was received at headquarters.
The response has been a joint effort, with the Bangladesh Army, Air Force, and Navy rescue teams all participating in the operation. A spokesperson for Bangladesh Airlines and the Civil Aviation Authority stated that the fire is currently contained to the cargo village area.
Several flights have been diverted to alternative airports. The incident causes significant disruption to air travel in and out of the Bangladeshi capital, with no immediate timeline given for the resumption of services. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
