PESHAWAR: A powerful explosion in a gas pipeline triggered a large fire in Peshawar’s Hassan Khel tehsil on Thursday, prompting emergency warnings and the diversion of gas supplies to several districts.
According to Peshawar’s capital city police chief, Dr Mian Saeed, the blast ignited a 24-inch pipeline. He said the cause of the explosion was still under investigation and urged residents to stay clear of the affected area as a safety precaution.
The CCPO said Sui Gas authorities had been instructed to immediately shut down the supply to the damaged section of the line. A spokesperson for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) said the affected segment had been isolated to protect the public.
Gas supply to Peshawar, Abbottabad and Mardan was being maintained through alternate routes, although some neighborhoods could experience reduced pressure. The spokesperson added that repair work would begin as soon as the fire was fully extinguished.
